Male Survivor Group

Of course, there are many negative consequences from childhood sexual abuse.  But one of the most common struggles for a childhood survivor of sexual abuse is an intense feeling of isolation.  Survivors come out of this trauma feeling a strong sense of shame and humiliation.  Even though many survivors might intellectually know different, they feel they are the only one who was abused in this way.  And they feel that they must keep this abuse hidden and secret.  This intention to keep this abuse secret end up making them feeling alone and isolated.  Many times, adult survivors avoid any kind of social connection and involvement for fear of being “found out.”

The group therapy experience helps to break this burden of isolation by providing a safe space where they can talk about the abuse with others who know what it’s like to be sexually abused as well.  Many members state that talking about their abuse and feeling understood has been very healing and has greatly decreased their sense of shame and fear.  It has also allowed members the opportunity to know and vent their feelings about their perpetrators that have often long been pent up.  This venting can go a long way to reattribute their sense of shame to shameful and manipulative motives and behaviors of their abusers.  This has also proven to be very healing and empowering for male survivor group members.  Although these male survivors were clearly alone during their abuse, they learn in group that they do not have to be alone as they recover from their abuse.  In fact, the sense that they are not alone in their recovery is part and parcel of their healing.

Also, because it is important for male survivors to know that their abuse does not have to define them, the group therapy experience works on a very broad canvas in regards to what is discussed and explored in the session.  Any and all thoughts and feelings are welcomed in the group, whether it appears related to their abuse or not.
